Το πρωί της Πέμπτης 16 Φεβρουαρίου 2012 το Λιμεναρχείο Σύρου ειδοποίησε τη MOm/Εταιρεία για τη Μελέτη και Προστασία της Μεσογειακής Φώκιας, για την παρουσία μιας μικρής φώκιας στην παραλία του Φοίνικα. Από την περιγραφή, τις φωτογραφίες και τα βίντεο που μας στάλθηκαν φαινόταν ότι πρόκειται για ένα νεαρό ζώο, αρκετά αδύνατο το οποίο δεν αντιδρούσε στην ανθρώπινη παρουσία. Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες, το ζώο βρισκόταν εκεί από το προηγούμενο βράδυ.
Η Ομάδα Διάσωσης της MOm, ταξίδεψε την ίδια μέρα στη Σύρο. Από την πρώτη εξέταση του ζώου, διαπιστώθηκε ότι επρόκειτο για ένα νεαρό αρσενικό, περίπου τριών μηνών, σε κακή διατροφική κατάσταση, αδύναμο, παθητικό και πολύ αφυδατωμένο. Με τις οδηγίες της υπεύθυνης κτηνιάτρου Δρ. Νατάσσας Κομνηνού, του παρασχέθηκαν οι πρώτες βοήθειες και ξεκίνησε η φαρμακευτική αγωγή. Την επόμενη μέρα το ζώο μεταφέρθηκε στην Αθήνα όπου και παρέμεινε μέχρι να σταθεροποιηθεί η κατάστασή του και να γίνουν όλες οι απαραίτητες εξετάσεις.
Σήμερα, ο μικρός «Φωκίωνας», όπως ονομάστηκε το ζώο από το Α1 τμήμα του 1ου Λυκείου Χολαργού, το οποίο υιοθέτησε συμβολικά το νεαρό φωκάκι, μεταφέρεται στο Κέντρο Περίθαλψης και Επανένταξης Μεσογειακής Φώκιας της MOm στην Αλόννησο, όπου με τη φροντίδα των νοσηλευτών της MOm θα παραμείνει εκεί μέχρι να ολοκληρώσει τη θεραπεία του, να ανακτήσει τις δυνάμεις του και να είναι πια έτοιμος να επιστρέψει στο φυσικό του περιβάλλον.
Η ΜΟm θέλει να ευχαριστήσει θερμά για την πολύτιμη συμβολή και βοήθειά τους το Λιμεναρχείο Σύρου και ιδιαίτερα την κα Μαρία Βουτσινά, την κτηνίατρο κα Σοφία Μαϊτού, τον κο Θανάση Κρίνο και όλους όσους βοήθησαν στη διάσωση του μικρού «Φωκίωνα».
In the morning of the 16th of February 2012, the Port Authority of the island of Syros, Cyclades, informed MOm, the Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal, for the presence of a young seal at the beach of Foinikas. From the description, the photographs and the videos that were sent to MOm, it seemed to be a young animal, quite thin with no reaction to human presence. According to residents of the area, the animal was on the beach from the previous evening.
MOm’s Rescue Team, arrived at Syros on the same night. The first examination of the animal showed that it was a young male, almost three months old, in a poor nutritional condition, weak, passive and very dehydrated. The Rescue Team provided first aid to the animal under the instructions of the responsible veterinarian and its intensive treatment started. The next day the young seal was transferred to Athens where it stayed until his condition was stabilized and all the necessary examinations were completed.
Now, the young seal, named “Fokionas”, is at MOm’s Rehabilitation Centre in Alonissos where MOm’s specialized team has already started his intensive treatment and rehabilitation program. The young seal will stay in the Rehabilitation Centre until his treatment is completed and “Fokionas” is strong enough to return to his natural environment.
Mediterranean monk seal is one of the 9 marine mammals that live permanently in the Greek Seas. MOm in collaboration with WWF Greece, implements the European Program “Thalassa: Learn, Act, Protect / Awareness, Educational and Participation Campaign for the Marine Mammals in Greece”, with the contribution of the LIFE financial instrument of the European Union, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and Blue Planet Shipping SA.
